Natural Vs Synthetic

May 10, 2017

Ash… There is so much hype about all natural.. Are your candles ‘all natural’ and what does this mean…?

We are often asked if our candles are all natural? The simple answer is no… We use a combination of natural and man made molecules in our fragrances, which allows us to make luxury, sustainable and affordable fragrances, with depth, strength and variety…

Unfortunately, the fragrance industry has been slow to educate consumers about the magic behind fragrances; and in particular when it comes to the differences between natural and manmade. But… We are here to set the record straight (in our opinion anyway!)

My aim in this blog is to be totally transparent with you.. I guess you could call it our transparency series where we uncover how we make candles, what goes into them, and how we made all of these decisions.. I would love for you to check out our other transparency articles on ‘Why Soy Wax?’ And ‘What goes into making Buddy&Me so special?’… But in this article in particular I want to dive into the fragrance world…

Firstly lets look at….. what is the difference between man made fragrance and natural oils?

Fragrance oils are man made. These are made with a similar composition to natural oils to smell like natural flowers, plants or fruits.

Essential oils or natural fragrances are plant based and made by removing the “essence” out of the plants to be used for medicinal purposes or for bath and body products.

The next question we normally get is “But Ash isn’t natural better and safer? And here is my answer…

You are not alone to wonder or think this.. When I started making candles I thought I would use only natural oils.. But through a deeper understanding of perfumery, and working along side a perfumer with many years of experience, we have learnt that natural is not always better, safer, or any less risky than man-made molecules. And here is why…

Some essentials oils are very delicate and do not react well to heat. This means that scented candles made with essential (natural) oils will not smell as strong as candles made with fragrance oils. It is also possible to have allergic and/or adverse reactions to essential oils as they are pure oils.

But don’t let me be bias here… there are certainly advantages and disadvantages to both… Which is why when we gained a deeper understanding of the nuances outlined above, the answer for us….  was to use a blend of natural and man-made molecules..

In essence this choice has allowed us to create true and strong fragrances with depth and delight.. It has allowed us to maintain ‘affordable luxury’  for our tribe.. So you can enjoy strong, beautiful fragrances and products at a consumable price…

Until next time…
